The professional mixed choir of the blind was founded in 1935 by the composer Mihail Shekerdjiev under the name Balkan. Today (since November 17, 1986) it carries the name of one of the greatest Bulgarian composers, academician Petko Staynov. In this unique in the world practice singing team, work talented people with impaired vision. For them music is the meaning of life and their way of livelihood and realization in society.
By proving its high artistic level, on October 1, 1948, with a government decree, the choir is declared "professional", and became the world's first mixed choir of blind artists subsidized by the government.
The repertoire of the choir is very extensive and includes works from all genres and styles in the music - pre-classics, classics, romanticism, contemporary music, Church-Slavonic chants, author's works of Bulgarian folk songs, vocal-symphonic works.
The love and dedication of the blind musicians find their place in the production of gramophone records, audio tapes, two CDs, recordings at the Bulgarian National Radio, performances of hundreds of concerts in the country and abroad (Germany, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Armenia, Belarus, Hungary, Turkey, Greece).
Conductors of the choir were Mihail Shekerdjiev, Nikolay Bechterov, Dimitar Domuzchiev, Ivan Slavov, Vasil Koev, Marko Markov, Mihail Karamihaylov, Stoyan Babekov, Krassimira Spiridonova.
Since 1997, the conductor of the choir is Petar Matev. visited the Nursing Home "Longevity" - 2014Foundation "Choir of the Blind "Academician Petko Staynov" was founded in October 1999 by members of the choral team. The chairman is Petar Matev - conductor of the choir.
The main task of the Foundation is to continue the activity of the Mixed Professional Choir of the Blind "Academician Petko Staynov" and to prevent the perishing of this extraordinary cultural conquest (until August 1999 the composition was supported by the Blind Union in Bulgaria but the funding was discontinued and the blind singers were left without work).
The Foundation works in the field of culture and social care. Its goals are: helping artists - blind people; searching and training of talented blind children with the prospect of their professional development; their rehabilitation and integration into society; exploiting their creative potential and providing opportunities for their realization through the dissemination and popularization of the Bulgarian musical culture.
Over the years since its inception, despite the tremendous difficulties, the Foundation has continued to look for forms and ways of realizing and expressing the creativity of the blind singers. A number of serious projects are being carried out with the financial support of the Agency for People with Disabilities, the National Endowment Fund "13 Centuries of Bulgaria", the Ministry of Culture, the Social Protection Fund of the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy, the National Culture Fund, the Culture Program of the Sofia Municipality. With the help of donors, sympathetic towards the arts and the difficult fate of those deprived of sight, two CDs with recording of the choir have been released - "Hope for Light", 2001, and "Colors", 2003. The stage performances of the composition do not stop: concerts in Sofia and in the country, participation in festivals and other cultural events.
